Week 17: Growing and hearing

Baby Bear's skeleton is changing from soft cartilage to bone, and the umbilical cord — the lifeline to the placenta — is growing stronger and thicker. Baby Bear weighs 5 ounces now (about as much as a turnip), and is around 5 inches long from head to bottom.

Baby Bear can hear and loud noises can actually startle Baby Bear. Baby Bear is practicing sucking and swallowing skills in preparation for that first suckle. Many of of the survival reflexes that Baby Bear will have at birth are being perfected in utero right now.
